To get a clearer picture of the crime in Colorado, ValuePenguin analyzed FBI data from 2012-2016 for cities in Colorado with 10,000 residents or more. Their results were surprising. 

  • Smaller Cities Had the Biggest Changes – with the exception of Colorado Springs, smaller cities reported the biggest changes in crime. Some smaller cities saw a huge uptick in crime, while others reported near record lows. 
  • Both Crime Types Rise or Fall Together – in cities that saw crime change, both property crime and violent crime have risen or fallen together. 
  • Three Most Populous Centers Saw Rise in Violent Crime – in three most populous Colorado cities, violent crime was on the rise

What Colorado Cities Had the Most Crime?

Cities in Colorado that saw the most crime included:

  • Lone Tree – a violent crime change of +191 and a property crime change of +1917
  • Durango – a violent crime change of -71 and a property crime change of +1519
  • Lakewood –  a violent crime change of +104 and a property crime change of +891
  • Westminster –  a violent crime change of -25 and a property crime change of +911
  • Wheat Ridge –  a violent crime change of -28 and a property crime change of +849

What Colorado Cities Saw the Biggest Drop in Crime?

Cities in Colorado that saw the biggest drop in crime included:

  • Colorado Springs –  a violent crime change of +41 and a property crime change of -580
  • Fruita –  a violent crime change of -8  and a property crime change of -479
  • Fort Collins –  a violent crime change of -55 and a property crime change of -317
  • Steamboat Springs –  a violent crime change of -41 and a property crime change of -268
  • Evans –  a violent crime change of -41 and a property crime change of -268
